Add options (toppings, sauces, extras) to a product or size
Options are the extras customers pick when they order an item: toppings on a pizza, a sauce with chips, a choice of drink in a meal. This article shows how to create them and add them to a product, or to every size of a product, from the product itself.
How options are organised
- An option group is a list of choices with a name, for example Toppings, Sauces or Choose your drink. (Older articles and some delivery apps call these "options" or "modifiers".)
- A choice is one item in the group, for example Extra cheese or Mushrooms, with its own price. A choice can be free (£0.00).
- You add an option group to a product, or to the sizes of a product that comes in sizes (older articles call sizes "attributes").
One option group can be used on many products. Change a choice's price once and it changes everywhere the group is used.
Before you start
Menu changes are made in Management > Menu > Menu Setup. If your stores share a company menu, you need to be a company owner or admin, and your change applies to every store. See Company or Store Menus.
Add options to a product without sizes
- Go to Management > Menu > Menu Setup.
- Open the category and click the pencil icon on the product. The Edit Product panel opens.
- Scroll to Option Groups.
- Either:
- Click Assign Option Group and pick a group you've already made, or
- Click Create new option group to make one here (see Create an option group from the product below).
The group is added to the product straight away.
Tip: You can do this while adding a brand-new product too. Tick the option groups you want, or click Create new option group, then save the product.
Add options to every size of a product
Most pizzas use the same toppings on every size. You can add an option group to all sizes in one go.
- Go to Management > Menu > Menu Setup.
- Open the category and click the pencil icon on the product. The Edit Product panel opens.
- Under Sizes, click either:
- Add option group to every size, then pick an existing group, or
- Create option group for every size to make a new one.
The group is added to every size of that product.
Note: A new product needs saving once before you can add sizes. Set Type to Product with sizes, save, then click Add Size for each size.
Add options to one size only
Use this when sizes need different groups, for example Toppings 10" at £1.00 a topping and Toppings 14" at £1.50.
- In the Edit Product panel, under Sizes, click the pencil icon on the size. The Edit Size panel opens.
- Scroll to Option Groups.
- Click Assign Option Group or Create new option group.
- Untick Add to every size of this product. It's ticked to start with, so leave it ticked if you do want the group on every size.
- Pick or create the group.
Create an option group from the product
When you click Create new option group (or Create option group for every size):
- Enter a name, for example Toppings, Sauces or Drinks.
- Tick Customer must choose at least one if the customer can't skip this group, for example a choice of sauce or base.
- Enter the first choice and its price. Leave the price at 0.00 for a free choice.
- Click Add choice for each extra choice.
- Click Create and add (or Create on a new product that hasn't been saved yet).
The new group also appears in the Option Groups card on the right of Menu Setup, where you can add it to other products.
Manage option groups
The Option Groups card on the right of Menu Setup lists every group. Each one shows how many products and sizes it's added to (Used by 12), or Not used.
- Add a choice to a group: click the group to open it, then click Add Choice. Enter the name and price and save. The new choice appears on every product that uses the group.
- Edit a group's settings: click ⋯ next to the group, then Edit. Here you set Required, Single Select (Radio), Min Per Option, Max Per Option, free choices (Free Type) and Show For.
- Create a group on its own: click Add Option Group at the top of the card.
- Change the order: drag a group, or a choice inside an open group, by its handle (the six dots on the left).
- Delete a group: click ⋯, then Delete. If the group is in use, the warning tells you how many products and sizes will lose it.
Fine-tune options on one product
On the product (or size), each option group you've added has:
- A globe switch to show it online (website, app, kiosk and delivery apps) and a screen switch to show it on the POS.
- An X to remove it from this product only. The group itself isn't deleted.
- The group's name, which you can click to open Choices for this product. There you can tick Default (included unless the customer removes it), Substitute (can be swapped free of charge) or Active (offered on this product at all). See Default and Substitute Toppings.
After you've made changes
Your POS, kiosk, website and app pick up the new options by themselves. Delivery apps need the menu sending: click Send to delivery apps at the top of Menu Setup. See Change your menu and update every channel.
Troubleshooting
I don't see Assign Option Group. Every option group you have is already on this product, or you haven't made any yet. Use Create new option group.
A topping isn't showing on my website or POS. Check these in order:
- The choice is Enabled (open it from the Option Groups card).
- The choice is Active on this product (click the group name on the product).
- The group's globe (online) or screen (POS) switch is on for this product.
- The group's Show For setting includes that channel.
- The topping hasn't been switched off in Quick Changes. See Out of stock items.
A topping shows on the website but not on Uber Eats. Click Send to delivery apps at the top of Menu Setup.
