Setting up free toppings (free option allowance)

Last verified: 2026-07-01

What a free option allowance does

A free option allowance lets an option group — such as Toppings — give the customer a set number of free choices, or a set amount of free extras, before they start paying. Two examples:

  • Any 2 toppings free on a pizza.
  • First £5 of extras free on a build-your-own box.

The allowance is set per option group, so you can make toppings free while still charging for other groups (like drinks or sides).

Note: The allowance applies to orders placed online, in your app, and at the kiosk. The correct total is always worked out for you when the customer adds the item to their basket.

The two allowance types

When you edit an option group you'll see a Free Type setting with three choices:

  • None — no allowance; every selection is charged normally.
  • Quantity — the first X selections are free. You set the number in Free Quantity.
  • Price — the first £X worth of extras are free. You set the amount in Free Price.

Note: When a customer picks toppings of different prices, the most expensive ones are made free first, so the customer always gets the best value. If a topping is chosen twice (for example double pepperoni), each portion counts as one towards a Quantity allowance.

How to set it up

  1. Go to Management > Menu > Menu Setup.
  2. Open the product (or the option group) you want to change, and find the Toppings option group — or whichever group you're offering the allowance on.
  3. Set Free Type:
    • Choose Quantity and enter a Free Quantity (e.g. 2 for "any 2 free").
    • Or choose Price and enter a Free Price (e.g. 5.00 for "first £5 free").
  4. Save.

Place a test order online to confirm the free toppings are applied as you expect.

Note: If your stores share a Company Menu, edit the option group at Company level (with no store selected in the switcher) — Menu Setup is hidden at store level for those stores. If your store manages its own menu, do this at Store level with the store selected.

Worked examples

Any 2 toppings free. Set Free Type = Quantity, Free Quantity = 2. A customer adds Pepperoni (£1.50), Mushrooms (£1.00) and Extra Cheese (£2.00). The two most expensive — Extra Cheese and Pepperoni — are free, so they're only charged £1.00 for the Mushrooms.

First £5 of extras free. Set Free Type = Price, Free Price = 5.00. A customer adds £6.00 of toppings. The first £5.00 is free and they pay £1.00.

Troubleshooting

  • The allowance isn't being applied. Check that Free Type is set to Quantity or Price (not None) and that the amount is greater than zero.
  • The wrong toppings are free. The system always frees the most expensive selections first — this is expected.
  • Editing at the wrong level. If you can't find Menu Setup, your stores may use a Company Menu; switch to Company level (deselect the store) and edit it there.
