Stop customers exiting the kiosk app (Kiosk Mode on SUNMI K2)

Last verified: 2026-08-01

What this covers

By default, an Android device lets anyone swipe or tap their way out of an app and into the home screen, settings, or a web browser. On a kiosk sitting in your dining room, that is an open invitation for customers to poke around.

Kiosk Mode locks the SUNMI K2 to a single app. The kiosk app fills the screen, the navigation buttons are hidden, and a staff password is required to get out.

Note: Kiosk Mode is a setting on the SUNMI K2 itself, not inside the MyFoodFast Kiosk app. There is nothing to switch on in your MyFoodFast dashboard — everything below happens in the K2's own Settings.

What the app already blocks

The MyFoodFast Kiosk app does some of the work on its own. Out of the box it:

  • Keeps the screen awake permanently, so the kiosk never sleeps mid-order
  • Ignores the Back button and the Volume keys

What it cannot block on its own is the Home button and the Recent apps button. Those are controlled by Android itself, which is exactly why Kiosk Mode is needed to finish the job.

Before you start

You will need:

  • Physical access to the kiosk
  • The K2's screen unlocked and on the Android home screen
  • A password you are happy to give to staff (you will set this during setup — write it down somewhere safe)

Warning: Once Kiosk Mode is on, you cannot leave the app without the password. If you lose it, you may need a factory reset, which wipes the kiosk's registration and menu cache.

Turn on Kiosk Mode

  1. From the kiosk's Android home screen, open Settings.
  2. Look for the kiosk lockdown section. Depending on which version of SUNMI OS your K2 is running, this is in one of these places:
    • ALL > System Customization > Kiosk Model
    • Settings > Lab > Kiosk
    • Settings > SUNMI Settings > Kiosk Mode
  3. Switch Kiosk Mode on.
  4. When prompted to choose the app, select MyFoodFast Kiosk.
  5. Set and confirm your exit password.
  6. Turn on auto-start on boot (sometimes labelled Default app or Startup app) so the kiosk reopens the ordering screen by itself after a power cut.
  7. Save, then restart the kiosk to confirm it comes back up straight into the ordering screen.

Note: SUNMI moves these menus between firmware versions. If none of the paths above match your kiosk, search Settings for "kiosk" using the magnifying glass at the top, or use the fallback below.

Fallback: Android App Pinning

If your K2's firmware does not offer SUNMI's Kiosk Mode, standard Android app pinning gives you most of the same protection.

  1. Open Settings > Security.
  2. Tap More security settings, then App pinning.
  3. Switch app pinning on, and turn on Ask for PIN before unpinning.
  4. Open the MyFoodFast Kiosk app.
  5. Open the Recent apps view, tap the app's icon at the top of its card, and choose Pin.

Note: App pinning does not survive a reboot. After any power cut, a member of staff must re-pin the app by hand. SUNMI's own Kiosk Mode is the better option where it is available, because it restarts into the locked app automatically.

Exiting Kiosk Mode for maintenance

To get out of the locked app — to join a new Wi-Fi network, install an update, or check the printer:

  1. Press and hold on the screen, or swipe down from the top edge, to bring up the exit prompt. The exact gesture varies by firmware; a long press in a blank area of the screen is the most common.
  2. Enter the exit password you set during setup.
  3. Do your maintenance, then reopen MyFoodFast Kiosk. Kiosk Mode re-locks as soon as the app is back in the foreground, or on the next restart.

Locking down a whole estate at once

If you run more than a handful of kiosks, setting each one by hand does not scale. SUNMI's remote management platform, SUNMI TMS, can push Kiosk Mode to every device in your fleet from a browser, under Device Management > Device Restrictions > Kiosk Mode.

This also lets you whitelist a second app — useful if your staff need access to a stock-taking or rota app on the same hardware.

Contact your SUNMI reseller to get your kiosks enrolled in TMS; it is not enabled by default.

Troubleshooting

Customers can still reach the home screen. Kiosk Mode saved but is not active. Restart the kiosk and check it boots straight into the ordering screen rather than the Android home screen.

The kiosk boots to the Android home screen after a power cut. The auto-start or default-app option was not switched on. Go back through the setup and enable it at step 6.

The exit password is not accepted. Some firmware versions use the device's screen-unlock PIN rather than a separate kiosk password. Try the device PIN before assuming the password is wrong.

You have lost the exit password. Contact support before attempting a factory reset — a reset clears the kiosk's registration, and it will need pairing to your store again afterwards.
