Taking a payment

Last verified: 2026-09-20

Opening the payment dialog

Tap Pay at the bottom of the order panel. The dialog shows the amount To pay and the order number at the top, and the payment methods your store has set up as cards: usually Cash, Card reader, Card and Pay later.

  • Card reader shows which reader this till pays on underneath, for example WisePOS E, or Tap to Pay on a till that takes cards itself.
  • Card is marked record only. Use it to record a card payment that was taken elsewhere, for example on a standalone terminal.

Cash

  1. Tap Cash.
  2. Enter what the customer hands you. Use the number keys, or tap one of the quick-cash keys on the left (£5, £10, £20, £50). Exact at the bottom of that column fills in the exact amount due.
  3. The Cash tendered box shows what you entered. When it is more than the amount due, Change due appears underneath in green. When it is less, the amount still missing shows in red.
  4. Tap Confirm cash. The button shows the amount being taken.

Other keys in the right-hand column of the keypad:

  • Reset sets the amount back to zero.
  • Split splits the bill (see below).
  • Discount opens discounts (see Applying discounts in store). Once a discount is on the order, the bottom of the dialog shows it, for example Discount 10% applied · −£4.54.
  • Open drawer opens the cash drawer without taking a payment. This key only appears on tills with a drawer.

Note: Confirm stays grey until the tendered amount covers the balance. The button tells you what is missing, for example Enter £17.40 or more.

Card reader

  1. Tap Card reader. The amount fills in automatically.
  2. Tap Confirm card reader. The reader asks the customer to present their card, and the panel on the right shows Waiting for customer to present card on the reader… while it waits.
  3. If the payment fails, the panel shows the reason from the reader. Tap Try again, or Clear reader & retry if the reader reports it is busy.

While a reader payment is in progress the dialog cannot be closed. Tap Cancel payment in the panel to stop it.

Splitting a bill

  1. Tap Split on the keypad, or use the − and + stepper next to Split payment on the right to choose how many ways to split.
  2. Each part is listed with its amount. Tap the pencil next to a part to type a different amount; the other unpaid parts adjust to keep the total right.
  3. Pay each part in turn. The part being paid is marked Paying now, paid parts show the method used, and the rest show Next. The header shows Split · paying 1 of 2 · £21.68 and the confirm button reads, for example, Confirm cash · split 1 of 2.

Each part can use a different payment method. Once a part has been paid, the number of splits can no longer be changed.

Pay later

Tap Pay later, then Confirm pay later. No money is taken now. The order goes to the Track screen marked Not paid, and you settle it from there with the Take £x button on its row.

After a payment

A confirmation shows Paid · order #202 to prepare with the total, what was paid and the Change due, and closes itself after five seconds. Tap Print again to reprint the customer receipt, or New order to start the next order straight away. The line under the heading tells you which receipts printed, for example Customer receipt printed · kitchen has the ticket.
