Kiosk Mode - Hide System Bars & Auto-Launch on Sunmi Terminals

Last verified: 2026-04-01

Overview

Kiosk Mode locks your Sunmi POS terminal into a dedicated POS experience by hiding the Android status bar (top) and navigation bar (bottom). When enabled, the app also automatically launches when the terminal is powered on, so staff never need to manually open it.

When to Use Kiosk Mode

  • Sunmi POS terminals in a restaurant or takeaway environment
  • When you want to prevent staff from accidentally leaving the POS app
  • When the terminal should boot straight into the POS without manual intervention

Note: Kiosk Mode only applies to Android devices such as Sunmi terminals. It has no effect on the web or Windows versions of the POS.

How to Enable Kiosk Mode

1. Enable in Back Office

  1. Log in to the Back Office
  2. Navigate to Settings > Terminals
  3. Select the terminal you want to configure
  4. Find the Full Screen Mode toggle
  5. Enable the toggle
  6. Save the changes

2. Restart or Reload the POS

The POS will pick up the new setting when:

  • The app is restarted, or
  • The terminal reloads its configuration on next login

Once loaded, the status bar and navigation bar will disappear immediately.

What Happens When Kiosk Mode is Enabled

Hidden System Bars

  • The Android status bar (top bar showing time, battery, notifications) is hidden
  • The Android navigation bar (bottom bar with back, home, and recent buttons) is hidden
  • If you swipe from the edge of the screen, the bars will briefly appear as translucent overlays and then automatically hide again

Auto-Launch on Boot

  • When the Sunmi terminal is powered on or rebooted, the POS app will automatically start
  • No manual action is required — the app opens as soon as the device finishes booting

How to Disable Kiosk Mode

  1. Log in to the Back Office
  2. Navigate to Settings > Terminals
  3. Select the terminal
  4. Disable the Full Screen Mode toggle
  5. Save the changes
  6. Restart the POS app on the terminal

The status bar and navigation bar will reappear after the app reloads its configuration.

Important Notes

  • Kiosk Mode is per-terminal — each terminal can be configured independently
  • Auto-launch always applies — once the app is installed on a Sunmi device, it will auto-launch on boot regardless of the Full Screen Mode setting. The Full Screen Mode toggle only controls whether the system bars are hidden.
  • Swipe gestures still work — swiping from the screen edge will temporarily show the bars, but they will auto-hide after a moment

FAQs

Can staff still access Android settings while in Kiosk Mode?

They can briefly reveal the navigation bar by swiping from the bottom edge, but it auto-hides. For full device lockdown, consider using Sunmi's built-in device management features alongside Kiosk Mode.

Does Kiosk Mode affect printing or other hardware functions?

No. Kiosk Mode only affects the visibility of system bars and auto-launch behaviour. All other POS features work normally.

Will the app auto-launch after a crash or force close?

The auto-launch only triggers on device boot. If the app crashes, it will need to be reopened manually or the device restarted.
