Caller ID with a phone line device

Last verified: 2026-08-06

Overview

A caller ID device is a small unit that plugs into your phone line at one end and into your POS's USB port at the other. It reads the caller's number straight off the line, so the incoming call popup appears the moment your phone rings.

We supply the CID Easy G/1. It works with traditional landlines and with VoIP or digital phone systems — if your phone plugs into a socket, whether that's a wall socket, your router, or an adapter, the device works with it.

Nothing about your phone line changes. Your number stays where it is: no porting, no call forwarding, and no monthly telephony charge. It's a one-off piece of hardware, and it keeps working if your internet drops.

Once a call reaches the POS, everything behaves as described in Caller ID: see who's calling on the POS — the same popup, customer lookup, and tap-to-start-an-order.

Already have a caller ID box?

CID Easy units are the same ones used by other ordering and EPOS providers, including Flipdish and Foodhub. If you're moving to MyFoodFast from one of those, the box you already have will most likely work — there's no need to buy another.

Unplug it from your old system, plug it into your MyFoodFast POS, and follow the setup below. If it doesn't pick up calls, send support a photo of the label on the underside and we'll tell you whether it's a compatible model.

What you need

  • A CID Easy G/1 device — contact support to order one, or use the one you already have
  • A Sunmi terminal or Android tablet running MyFoodFast POS, with a spare USB port
  • Your phone line reaching the POS

Note: You do not need a Windows PC or any other computer. The POS reads the device directly.

Setting it up

  1. Plug the device into your phone line. Run the phone cable from your wall socket (or router, or adapter) into the device, then your handset into the device's other socket so the phone still works as normal.
  2. Plug the device into the POS using the USB cable.
  3. Allow the POS to use it. The first time you plug it in, Android asks for permission to access the USB device. Tap OK, and tick Use by default for this device if offered so you aren't asked again.
  4. Turn Caller ID on for that terminal in Back Office: go to Setup > In-Store > POS Terminals, click the terminal, set Caller ID to Yes, and save.
  5. Restart the POS app. The terminal reads its Caller ID setting on startup, so the change won't take effect until you close and reopen the app.
  6. Test it. Ring the store from a mobile. The popup should appear within a second or two of the phone starting to ring.

Good to know

  • It works with the internet down. The number is read from the line, not fetched from us, so the popup still appears. Only the customer's name needs the internet — an offline call shows the number on its own.
  • Unplugging the device stops caller ID on that terminal, and plugging it back in starts it again. No restart needed.
  • One device, one POS. The device feeds the terminal it's plugged into. For popups on a second terminal you'd need a second device.
  • Calls won't appear in the Caller ID Logs report. The device talks straight to your POS without going through us, which is exactly why it keeps working when your internet doesn't.

Troubleshooting

  • No popup on any call. Check in order: is the USB cable firmly in the POS; is Caller ID set to Yes for that terminal in Setup > In-Store > POS Terminals; has the app been restarted since? If all three are right, unplug the device and plug it back in — the Android permission prompt should reappear, which confirms the POS can see it.
  • The permission prompt appears every time. Tick Use by default for this device when it asks.
  • Your handset shows the caller but the POS doesn't. The device is reading the line but not reaching the app. Check the USB cable, then restart the app.
  • The number appears but the customer is always "Unknown". The number is being read correctly, so this is about your customer records rather than the device — see the troubleshooting in Caller ID: see who's calling on the POS.
  • Nothing appears and your phone doesn't ring either. That's a phone line problem — check the line with a normal handset first.

If you're still stuck, contact support and tell us whether the handset itself shows the caller's number. That single answer tells us whether the problem is your phone line or the POS, and saves a lot of back and forth.
