Show default option values on the Kitchen Display
If you sell configured products such as pizzas, burgers, or build-your-own bowls, your kitchen staff need to know what goes on the base version before they can read the customer's modifications. Without this, staff joining mid-shift fall back to leaflets or memory, which slows tickets and increases errors.
When you turn on Show Default Options, every Kitchen Display in your store will list the default option values for each order item — for example, a default pizza's toppings — directly under the item name. The setting is the same one that controls printed kitchen receipts, so receipts and KDS stay in sync.
Note: This feature is off by default. Once you turn it on, both your printed kitchen receipts and every KDS screen in the store start showing defaults together — they share the same setting.
Before you start
- You'll need access to the back office to edit Receipt settings.
- The KDS app must be running the latest version. Older app versions will ignore the setting and continue rendering only customer modifications.
Step 1 — Turn on Show Default Options in the back office
- Go to Setup > POS > Receipts.
- Find the Show Default Options toggle.
- Turn it on and save.
Step 2 — Confirm on the KDS
Reload your KDS screen. For any configured product, you'll now see the default values listed under the item name, grouped by option category:

- Default values appear in a neutral grey colour, with no
+or-prefix — they describe what the base product contains, not what the customer changed. - Customer modifications continue to appear below the defaults in their usual colours (green
+for additions, red-for removals). - Option groups are listed in the same order they appear on POS.
- If a customer removes a default value (for example, "No Cheese"), the default line for that value is hidden — you'll only see the struck-through
- Cheesemodifier line, so there's no duplication.
Expo screens
Defaults appear on both Station and Expo displays. There's no separate Expo toggle — if the setting is on, every kitchen display shows the same defaults.
Common questions
Will this change my printed kitchen receipts? The toggle has always controlled printed receipts as well. Turning it on for the KDS will also turn it on for receipts — if your receipts were already showing defaults, the KDS will now match. If they weren't, you'll start seeing defaults on both.
Can I show defaults on one KDS station but not another? Not currently. The setting is store-wide and applies to every Kitchen Display screen. If you have a specific need for per-screen control, contact support — we can take it as a feature request.
Does this work for pizza sizes (and other attribute-variant products)? Yes. If your product uses size attributes (e.g. Small, Medium, Large) and each size carries its own defaults, the KDS will show the defaults for the size the customer ordered.
Will the kitchen display still update orders in real time after I turn this on? Yes — turning the toggle on or off only changes what's rendered. It does not affect how orders are received, bumped, or tracked.
