What is the WisePOS E?
The Stripe WisePOS E is a countertop smart card reader that connects over the internet. Once it's registered to your store, staff on the POS can send a payment straight to the reader — the customer taps or inserts their card, and the order is marked paid automatically.
Note: You need a connected Stripe account and a card reader location before you can register a reader. Both are set up on the same page.
Before you start
- Make sure your Stripe account is connected and your card reader location shows as connected. Both are on Setup > Integrations > Stripe, at Store level (with a store selected in the switcher).
- Turn on the WisePOS E and connect it to your shop's Wi-Fi (or plug in the ethernet cable).
Generate a pairing code on the reader
- On the reader, swipe from the left edge of the screen to open the menu.
- Tap Settings.
- Tap Generate pairing code. The reader shows a three-word code like
apple-banana-cherry.
Register the reader
- In the Back Office, go to Setup > Integrations > Stripe at Store level (with a store selected in the switcher).
- Scroll to the Smart card readers section.
- Enter the Registration code shown on the reader.
- Enter a Label you'll recognise, like "Front counter".
- Click Register reader.
The reader appears in the list with an Online badge when it's connected and ready.
Take a payment on the reader
Once registered, the reader is available to your POS — staff choose the reader when taking a card payment and the amount appears on the reader screen for the customer to tap or insert their card. If the card is declined, the POS shows the reason so staff can retry or take another payment method.
Remove a reader
- Go to Setup > Integrations > Stripe at Store level.
- In Smart card readers, click the bin icon next to the reader.
- Confirm the removal.
The POS will no longer be able to send payments to that reader.
Troubleshooting
- The reader shows as Offline — check the reader is powered on and connected to the same network it was registered on. The status refreshes each time you open the Stripe page.
- "Store has no card reader location" when registering — connect the card reader location first in the Card reader settings section of the same page.
- "Invalid registration code" — pairing codes expire after a short time. Generate a fresh code on the reader and try again.
- The reader says it's busy — another payment is already in progress on the reader. Finish or cancel that payment on the POS first.
